Armed police hunt big cat

- Police armed with shotguns and rifles hunted a big cat believed to be on the loose in Hertford.
Two officers spotted a "large, feline-type animal" on the prowl by the police station in Stanstead Road just before 7am on Saturday.
It sparked a three-hour search involving 21 officers, including two firearms units, and the head keeper at Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne, Colin Elcombe.
He was ready to use a blowpipe loaded with tranquiliser darts if the black cat was spotted again.

Feline family steal ride on train

- A cat and her four kittens have refused to move from their new home - a historic rail locomotive.
RSPCA officials have been trying for three days to coax the feline family out of the Class 14 engine, which arrived in Barnsley on Tuesday.
The Elsecar Railway Preservation Group rented it from a Wakefield company, but it arrived with the extra travellers.

Mystery cat takes regular bus to the shops

- Bus drivers have nicknamed a white cat Macavity after it has started using the No 331 several mornings a week.
The feline, which has a purple collar, gets onto the busy Walsall to Wolverhampton bus at the same stop most mornings -
he then jumps off at the next stop 400m down the road, near a fish and chip shop.

Pet welfare act coming into force

The Animal Welfare Act, which became law in Wales last week, includes harsher fines of up to £20,000 and jail terms of up to a year for cruelty.
